Just Jesus is our 2017 summer series…

  • Power of Jesus
  • Prayers of Jesus
  • Problems of Jesus
  • Priorities of Jesus – 7/16/2017

Robust Subject – Who He Is…. What He Did…. How He Lived…

Infinite God man, YES [John 1:1,14]; John 1:1,14 (NIV84)

1      In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Savior, YES….1 John 4:14

“We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.”

Matthew 1:21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

We could talk about either of these: Who He Is… What He Did… But also: How He Lived…

But, there is more – He is our example… 1 John 2:6.

Jesus is the infinite God man, YES!  Jesus is Savior, YES!  And, in addition, Jesus is our great example of how to live life.  Let us learn of Him, who modeled and taught us how to live.

WWJD?  Who here claims to live in Him?

Let us learn what it means to “walk as Jesus did” because we read in 1 John 2:6 “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”

1 John 2:6 (NIV84) “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”

Today’s focus – PRIORITIES = “the thing that you think is most important and that needs attention before anything else”

Intro… Your priorities? Show me checkbook n calendar…

  • Checkbook – where treasure is, your heart will follow… Own stuff, then stuff owns you – your time, your treasure… [Kayaks – compelled to use them…]  Hoard stuff vs. share it. Ben – write in Family Bible… “we use things and love people, we don’t love stuff and use people”

Matthew 6:19–21 (NIV) 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  • Calendar – Governed by your priorities – if you don’t control it, others will… Schedule your priorities. In College, advisor – no time for quiet time.  Advisor at College – too busy for quiet time… you’ll give your time to what is important to you.  Urgent / Important [unfelt need] “apart from me, you can do nothing…”

Just not enough time in a day for everything, must choose!

Will of Father, Glorify God, Enjoy Him Forever…  Westminster Shorter Catechism

“What is the chief end of man? A. Man’s chief end is to glorify God,[1] and to enjoy him forever.”

Mega Rock?

When we seek to be an authentic representation of Jesus, we glorify God –  Hebrews 1:3 (NIV84) “ The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”

John 17:4 (NIV)  I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.

In John 7, Jesus, by His own admission, came to earth “seeking the glory of the One who sent Him “.

.. world needs less of me.  More of Christ in me

Christ in me… Jeremy Camp.

So come and empty me
So that it’s you I breathe
I want my life to be
Only Christ in me

So Long Self, Mercy Me

Believe it or not but life is not apparently
About me anyways
But I have met the One who really is worthy
So let me say

So long, self

Well, it’s been fun, but I have found somebody else
So long, self
There’s just no room for two
So you are gonna have to move
So long, self

Now, let’s transition from our “chief end” to how we live out our “chief end” by way of priorities – the things we give our time, passion, energy, resources to…  Options: Work, Family, God, Friends, Recreation, Learning, Health, Money, Career, Hobbies…

Big Rocks… focus on your Big Rocks first – major on majors, minor on minors.

What is your besetting sin from Hebrews mine was Athletics [testimony re Tennis as God] and Possessions. Ben writing in the Family Bible. We don’t use people and love things but instead we love people and use things.

7/16, Priorities of Jesus.   Luke 6:12-19 Up, In, Out

God’s Goal for you?  Phil 1:6, Rom 8:28,29

Philippians 1:6 (NLT)  And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Big Idea of Romans 8:28,29 is that “God is working in all things that we would be conformed to the likeness of his Son”

Means  of Growth… Word, Spirit (experience God), People, Circumstances/Trials.

Living in Relationship – IN John 13:1–20

  • John 13
  • Commit to Others – “Better Together” Who is in your top 3? Thank them… “Doing life with you makes me better, makes my life richer, thanks”
  • Cover Others –
  • Serve Others – Mark 10:45 Did not come to be served by to serve, give life as ransom… Never more like Jesus than when you’re serving others. Focus of Jesus’ at last supper? Not betrayal and denial… Service and Prayer for…

Ask for a Towel, not a Title… Luke 22 “Greatest argument at table”

Mark 14:13 sent 2 ahead to prepare…

John 13:1–5 (NIV84) 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. 2 The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

What if I were there… A doubter like Thomas?  A denier like Peter? A betrayer like Judas?

Who is the back stabbing person who acts like they don’t even know me that needs a foot washing?  That God is calling me to Cover them, Serve them?

friends cause problems but worth it.

    • Influence via Relationship – Impress from afar, Impact up close…

    • Better Together – Eccl 4, 50+ OA commands

Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 (NIV)

Two are better than one,

because they have a good return for their labor:

10 If either of them falls down,

one can help the other up.

But pity anyone who falls

and has no one to help them up.

11 Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.

But how can one keep warm alone?

12 Though one may be overpowered,

two can defend themselves.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Right on my calendar, Ministry is people. People matter people count God loves people Matt r 18

Matthew 22:36–39 (NIV)

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

A Call to Covering :  ‘One Another’ Imperatives [50+, Love One Another is greatest… Matt. 22. Jesus’ was about Loving God and thus Others…]  Matthew 22:36–39 (NIV)36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’  38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

Love, BCC mission… Evangelistic Implications. More of Him, less of us. John 17:23 “…that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

Forgive – Ephesians 4:32 (NIV84)”Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Bear With – Ephesians 4:2 (NIV84)”Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”

Bear Burdens – Galatians 6:1–2 (NIV84)” Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

= Pick up, Bear, Carry, Share, Support…

*Covering Others [forgive = see verses for Life Jesus study]

Bible Words Translated “Cover”

  • Hebrew – haksh = to forgive.

Ps 85:2 “You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins.”

Prov 17:9 “He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”

  • Greek – epikalyptō = to forgive.

Rom 4:7 “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”

*Serving Others – Who is the backstabbing betrayer I need to wash feet? Mark 10:45

Leaning on God – UP Matthew 26:30, 36–46 Garden of Gethsemane.  Desperately Dependent or Independently Desperate.  Apart from Me, Nothing!

  • Matthew 26
  • Go to God – Keep praying… 3 times. Where do you go when life gets tough? Pain in Vain?

James 1:2–5 (NIV84)

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

  • Be Honest
  • Surrender to His will

Matthew 26:36–46 (NIV84) 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him [BOB… 12/3(garden, transfiguration)], and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter.  41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” 42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time [Luke 18 – The Parable of the Persistent Widow], saying the same thing. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

What if I were there…

Psalm 18:2 “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Psalm 62:5–8 (NIV)

5 Yes, my soul, find rest in God;

my hope comes from him.

6 Truly he is my rock and my salvation;

he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

7 My salvation and my honor depend on God;

he is my mighty rock, my refuge.

8 Trust in him at all times, you people;

pour out your hearts to him,

for God is our refuge.

1 Peter 5:7  (KJV)  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Luke 6 Jesus UP IN OUT… Luke 6:12 (NIV) One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.

Matthew 28:18–20 (NIV84)  18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

What if I were there…
